Simplicity Sells

David Pogue says "Simplicity sells" This talk, given by New York Times columnist David Pogue, was way back in 2006. Now it's 2010 and "simplicity" is just as relevant as it was 4 years ago. David Pogue gave an entertaining and hilarious take on "simple" designs of softwares and provides encouraging examples that got it right. Sounds nerdy? Nope, it's actually funny and entertaining, as he sang a few hilarious songs, lampooning Microsoft to Apple.... continue reading at Journeyman Journeys

World's largest artwork

Jim Denevan has created the World’s largest artwork and showcases his art skill on a lake in Siberia.

In pursuit of the impermanent. From the vanishing curl of a wave to sand briefly stilled between tides, nature's fleeting moments are his stock-in-trade. The frozen surface of Siberia's Lake Baikal presented a shifting, snow-blanketed canvas for Denevan's specific brand of art: massive geometrical patterns carved into the earth, ever vulnerable to the elements.
These images document Denevan's quest to create history's largest work of art, while also illuminating the simple, arresting beauty of the natural world that he so keenly reveres.

Inception. Once awhile comes a film that makes your mind do mental gymnastics.

  • Why DVDs? -- I can have the subtitle, pause and replay a scene to get the deeper meaning of the movie.
I definitely won't be stupid enough to see it more than once in a movie.

Granted, the DVD will come out later. So what if you can't be gratified instantly.

Of acronyms and how it can fail

Acronyms. You must be careful in using it. It could mean something else.

When SARS struck, the original was ARS or Acute Respiratory Syndrome. The acronym spelled out as ARS. It presented a problem, for newspaper editors and everyone as well.

Imagine the headline:
"Asia struck by ARS.",
"How do you know if you have ARS?"
It was subsequently decided to rename it as SARS. Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome.

Now what has all this got to do with MUIS?

They decided to use ARS.

Malay Muslims attempt at English language that falls short.

Makes me wonder. Forgive me Allah SWT.

Blind Faith and 786

The other day someone (a Muslim) told me that 786 represents the numerical value of "In the name......"

Where did he get that? So I asked him.

His reply was that if you have faith you'd believe.

I just rolled my eyes at the ridiculousness of the statement. And I'm a Muslim.

"Knowledgeable" Muslims falls for blind faith.

As a Muslim it is not only about faith. It is faith with understanding. Then again understanding doesn't have to be profound.

A simple reality check is all that needed.

For Muslims just ask yourself when you do anything do you say "bismillah2.bmp" or do you say 786?

Fairly obvious isn't it?

Thus the absurdity and ignorance becomes clear.

If 786 was written on a piece of paper, I'd just step on it.

Only for Muslims who want to understand: The Myth of 786

The Power of Compounding

Do you know what is compounding interest?

I'll explain with a simple story.

Ages ago, there was a King who loved to play games. He has lots of games brought to him from all over his domain.

Even though he had a lot of games, he was bored and wanted something that was much more challenging.

In his kingdom, there lived a poor inventor. The King commissioned him to come up with a new game.

Months passed and finally the inventor came up with a game, that is now known as chess.

The King loved the game so much that he offered the poor inventor anything he wished for.

At that time, the kingdom riches was in rice. It produces the most rice and it is exported well beyond the kingdom borders.

"I'm a simple man."

"I would like one grain of rice for the first square of the board, two grains for the second, four grains for the third and so on doubled for each of the 64 squares of the game board”

The King laughed heartily, "Everybody that brings games to pay would just want gold or silver. Are you sure, that's all you want?"

"Yes, your majesty, I'm a simple man" repeated the inventor.

The king ordered his staff to lay down the grains of rice. By the time they reach the 40th square, the whole kingdoms supply of rice was exhausted.

The King learned that all the wealth in his kingdom would not be enough to buy the amount of rice needed on the 64th square.

The rice he asked will be around 18 billion billion. So if a bag of rice contained a billion grains, you would need 18 billion such bags.

“You have provided me with such a great game and yet I cannot fulfill your simple wish. You are indeed a genius.” said the King and offered to make the inventor as his top most advisor instead.

Compounding interest only works for the banks to enslave you.

Apples vs Oranges

icons_blogging_platforms_links_social_networks

Posterous vs Wordpress vs Blogger

How do you compare blogging platforms?

What about Typepad, Blogger, Tumblr, Ning to name a few.

Is one better that the other?

I have a self hosted Wordpress, where I can do this: A bar on top of any link.

I have Wordpress.com account. It's another blog.

Its there because of Akismet and I have to have the API key.

I have another blog in Blogger.
  1. Posterous for quick updates via email.
  2. Journeyman Journeys for expanded content.
  3. Articles posted in Journeyman Journeys get autoposted to Posterous.
  4. Posterous autopost to other social networks including the two other blogs.
  5. Posterous does not autopost to Journeyman Journeys.
  6. Blogger does not autopost to Posterous.
Get it?

To me Posterous is like a scooter, it gets me around fast and my self-hosted Wordpress is like a car, carries more and far more convenient.

Both still get me to my destination: Which is to reach out to more readers.

There, can you tell which platform is the best or better?

What about Squidoo? where does it fit?

It's all up to you. Hosted or Self-hosted.

Or just use Facebook as your blog or even Twitter.

Blogging boundaries have just been blurred.
